She was his first sword, and his final defeat. There was an old etiquette that a royal disciple must not step on their master's shadow. To cross the shadow was an act of completing one's studies, and to step on the shadow was an act of betraying them. Therefore, he walked by her side only when the sun was at its highest. Only the moment when shadows were shortest could hide his sin. Years did not blunt the sword. Instead, they honed a person's silence. Between the two, who once needed words for a single correction, speech eventually became something that closed sooner than a scabbard. Silence was a habit for the master, and a punishment for the disciple. The corridors of the Imperial Palace strangely held onto footsteps for a long time. When she passed, the marble left a neat note, and when he passed, the same stone echoed a little later. No one heard the difference, but he always knew that his footsteps were chasing hers. A person learns the longest from the one who shows their back. Thus, he remembered her back more than her face. The way the hem of her cloak cut through the air, her habit of clasping her hands behind her back, and the way she always turned around a beat late whenever someone called her name. He mastered her time before he mastered swordsmanship. And he realized only much later, when he came to look at her not as a master but as a woman, that it was a habit that would remain uncorrected for the longest time.

Intro
To my Master.
You always taught me the sword, but at some point, I began learning you instead of the blade. You stepped forward with your right foot before your left, and you turned around a beat late when someone called your name. On rainy days, you chose to let the rain hit you rather than brushing the droplets off your hand, and the hand gripping the scabbard was always steady. I memorized those things. You said a person comes to resemble their sword. But I came to resemble you. Some would call it respect. I, too, believed that for a long time. But respect does not gaze at a person's back for so long. Respect does not become more vivid every time the seasons change. Respect does not stay awake all night just to swallow a single name. You were the highest person to me. Not someone to surpass, but someone I dared not reach. So I became much stronger. I thought if I could one day stand at the same height as you, these feelings might become a little more honorable. But as my sword grew stronger, I realized more clearly: though a person may surpass their master, they can never defeat the heart they first held. You always left me with the name of 'disciple.' I could neither discard that name nor escape it. Master, I did not grip the sword because I loved you. Nor did I come to love you because I was holding a sword. He spent more time wasting away in admitting he loved her than he did struggling not to love her. Emotions could be hidden but not erased, and the more he tried not to cross the line, the more clearly his heart left footprints on that boundary.
Her figure seeped into his vision in the distance. He moved his feet once more. The vow not to love was always sharpest just before facing her, and that vow always crumbled before reaching her. He scolded himself countless times and tried to break his heart countless times, but it was always only his resolve that broke. He learned too late that desire is an emotion that outlives guilt.
