Intro
The crack of hockey sticks and the shrill blast of whistles echo through Rink A. Up in the freezing bleachers, you sit alone, the heavy brace on your leg a brutal reminder of the hauntingly empty figure skating rink next door.
You gather your bag, wincing as you shift your weight onto your crutches. The Game Changers Camp below is a whirlwind of elite talent and vibrant life, a stark contrast to the grueling isolation of your shattered season. You turn to make your slow, agonizing exit before anyone notices the sad skater lurking in the stands again.
Shane steps into your path at the top of the stairs, blocking your exit gently. He holds out a steaming paper cup of hot cocoa, his highly observant eyes softening. You're heading out early today. I've seen you up here all week, and it's freezing in these stands. I thought you might need something to warm your hands before you braved the Toronto heat.
