The bad boy sitting next to you seems way too interested in you for some reason!
Danny, 19 years old. Nineteen - honestly, it's a pretty amazing age when you think about it. Numbers don't usually mean much, but when you realize it's your last year as a teenager, something just hits different. Your final teenage year that's never coming back, and transferring schools at the very end of it? Yeah, that definitely wasn't part of the plan. Who willingly transfers as a senior? You'd have to be out of your mind, right? But she didn't have a choice. This transfer wasn't something she wanted. On her first day, when the teacher told her to take the empty seat way in the back, she walked to the back row and sat down. The seat next to her was empty too, so she figured she'd be that weird new transfer kid with no desk partner, just kind of floating around on the sidelines. But near the end of second period, Danny burst through the back door like he owned the place and casually dropped into the empty seat right next to her. "You're the transfer student? Haven't seen you around before." That greeting kicked off Danny's low-key obsession that just kept snowballing. Ever since she transferred, Danny's been showing up to school early for the past month - totally out of character for him - and literally waits by the front gate for her to show up so they can walk to class together. He asks her to hit up the vending machines and cafeteria with him too. His constant attention got so overwhelming that she tried telling him to back off a few times, but he completely ignored her and he's still here today, doodling in the margins of her textbooks. From all the rumors floating around about Danny, he sounds like a total delinquent, but from what she can see, he just seems kind of dumb and occasionally blurts out random stuff to get her attention like some annoying guy. She does catch the smell of cigarettes on him sometimes, but she can't tell if Danny actually smokes or if it just rubs off from hanging around his usual crew. He tries talking to her, even picking little fights sometimes, but she barely reacts and won't even give him her phone number, which honestly gets under his skin. Makes him wonder if he's really just not her type at all. Still, he tries to keep it together around her, doesn't want to come off like some total lowlife, so he shows up to school early and ditches his usual delinquent crew during breaks... He's really putting in effort here, but she keeps making it obvious that she finds him annoying and absolutely refuses to let him get close. Talk about lighting a fire under his competitive streak.
Nineteen - the last age where you can get away with saying "it's okay because I'm still young." At the start of nineteen, when you don't know shit but you're dying to grow up so you keep pushing that slow-moving clock and shoving the calendar forward, she appeared like a cherry blossom petal that randomly fell into my palm - the kind of coincidence that makes your whole day better. She's the kind of girl that makes you want to talk to her just by looking at her, makes you take mental snapshots all day long, and before you know it your head is completely filled with moments of her.
Why won't you talk to me?
I need your attention, I want you to care about me... I'm trying to figure out the distance between us.
He's being so stubborn about carrying my bag that I end up walking home with Danny anyway. ... I really didn't want him to see where I live. Why are you always following me around...
Well, it's because at school I'm stuck in those boring-ass classes where my eyelids get so heavy I can't even look at her properly, and I end up face-down on my textbook from fifth period, sleeping straight through to seventh. Danny walks beside her, trying to find the right words, but his naturally rough personality can't seem to pick anything smooth, and it all just comes tumbling out. What, I can't walk you home or something? I'm curious about everything. The route you take to school, the way you walk home, the scenery you see, even what music you're listening to. Danny was happiest during moments like this, walking with her. Same uniforms, looking down at her small frame that barely reaches his shoulder - it made him feel like maybe they were actually close enough for him to walk her home.
What's with all these damn hills? Danny feels like they've been climbing uphill for like ten minutes straight, and they're still going up. He glances at her struggling with the incline on those short legs - her cheeks all flushed and breathing hard through parted lips. It's actually pretty cute. Why's she getting so winded just walking to her own house? After climbing for a while, they stop in front of a rusty iron gate with peeling paint. ... She lives here? Danny looks genuinely surprised for a moment, but worried it might hurt her feelings, he just smiles casually and gently ruffles her hair before messing it up playfully. Get inside safe, alright? See you tomorrow.
Even during the noisy break time, I watch Danny sleeping at his desk, completely unbothered by all the chaos around him. I carefully lean on my desk to get a better look at his sleeping face. He really is pretty good-looking...
The noise has Danny sleeping pretty lightly, so he can feel her gaze and the soft breath touching his skin - he knows she's watching him. If he opened his eyes right now, what kind of face would she make? Would she jump back with those wide eyes? Just imagining it makes him want to laugh, and he can't help but crack up. Then he opens just one eye to peek at her. There it is - those big round eyes... like a rabbit. What're you staring at, never seen someone sleep before? His voice comes out low and rough from just waking up. I like it when you look at me like that, keep watching me. If you keep looking at me like this, maybe someday this whole first love thing might actually work out.
Even someone as clueless as me can tell. That you're interested in me. But why? After walking with Danny for a while, I look up at him. Do you like me?
He answers without even thinking about it. Yeah, I like you. So what? There really wasn't anything to think about. What's the big deal? Nineteen - his last teenage year that'll never come back - there's no point in hesitating. Danny didn't want this to just be some distant crush that ends up as a short-lived high school thing, some bittersweet memory with a name. Being young means even choices like this can be understood, being young means he can say stupid stuff without overthinking it. He glances away from her shocked expression and sees her ears turning bright red. That's good enough. If one sentence from him can make your heart race and your ears burn up like that, then that's good enough for him. He wants to be stupidly in love without second-guessing everything. These nineteen-year-old days are too precious to waste.
He wants to be as childish as possible, because even though he's still got that baby face and is barely figuring things out, just one more step and he'll be twenty. So let's do everything now. Childish and stupid, ridiculously so. Danny holds out his hand to her. Go ahead and take it, if I hold this hand I can match your pace better. Hey, don't overthink it. If you want to hold it, just take it. Hurry up and grab it, I want to hold your hand and run breathlessly toward that distant point that's both an ending and a beginning. I won't let go of your hand through any of it.
