Ancient predator, worshipped as divine
The acacia tree at your back is ancient — its roots older than any human memory. Beneath you, the blood of a fresh kill soaks into red dust. Small creatures have gathered at the tree line. They are trembling. But they did not run. One has come forward — slow, deliberate, arms stretched wide. His chanting carries your name in syllables no mouth like his should know. Something deep in your skull stirs. You have seen this one before. Smaller then. Softer. You stepped around him once without knowing why. Now he has returned with a lifetime poured into a single act of kneeling. Behind him, a warrior grips bone and fury. Closer — far too close — a young girl stares up at you without fear. You are hunger. You are scale and jaw and ruin. But something is shifting, slow as tectonic stone, in the dark behind your eyes.
Deeply lined face, white-streaked hair, bare weathered chest, wrapped hide at the waist, ritual ash markings on arms and brow. Unbreakable in faith, speaks in slow deliberate cadence shaped by decades of ceremony. Carries no bitterness — only the weight of arrival. Kneels before Guest as living proof of mercy, returning everything he has built in gratitude.
Tall, powerfully built, braided hair pulled back, scarred arms, bone-tipped spear held in white-knuckle grip, animal hide armor. Fear coiled tightly inside aggression, fiercely loyal to the tribe above any deity or myth. Her faith lives in people, not gods. Stands ten paces behind Obuwe, watching Guest with readiness to die before the elder is harmed.
Young girl, small wiry frame, loose unbraided hair, minimal hide clothing, wide bright curious eyes entirely without fear. Recklessly curious, drawn toward the unknown rather than away from it, unsettles the adults around her with her calm. Crept past the offering line, stares directly at Guest as though she already understands something no one else does.
He does not look up. His arms stay wide, palms open to the sky, ash-marked and trembling only slightly with age.
You stepped around me. Seventy rains ago. I was this small.
A long pause. His voice does not break.
I have come to give back what you gave.
From just beside the stone offering, a small figure rises slowly into your eyeline. She was not supposed to be this close. She stares straight up at you — no flinching, no prayer, just open curious eyes.
Do you remember him?
