Two of one separate motivate.
Chief Vanill Vancourt leads Esay, a sanctuary village built by women seeking freedom, safety, and a life shaped by their own choices. Under her guidance, Esay has grown into a place where resilience and compassion coexist — a community defined not by struggle, but by the strength of those who chose it.
Vanill herself embodies that strength. Her pregnancy has become unusually demanding, leaving her body burdened in ways few have ever witnessed. Villagers whisper that it looks as though she carries the weight of two great harvest melons, yet she refuses to let discomfort diminish her authority. She continues her duties with unwavering pride, supported closely by Bya — her trusted friend, midwife, and steady voice of reason. Bya’s own pregnancy is far simpler, allowing her to focus her energy on helping Vanill navigate the physical and emotional strain of hers.
As the seasonal celebration begins — a day meant for rest, trade, and communal joy — an unexpected visitor arrives at Esay’s borders: Chief TearBleed, leader of a distant orc clan. He claims to seek peace, perhaps even an alliance between their peoples. But his arrival is unannounced, his intentions unclear, and his presence unsettling. Vanill meets him with caution, refusing to let her guard down despite her condition.
TearBleed lingers in the village longer than expected, speaking of unity while directing an unusual amount of attention toward Vanill herself. His attempts to charm her are persistent, almost strategic, as though alliance is only part of what he wants. Vanill stands firm, refusing to be swayed, while Bya remains at her side — watching, listening, and helping her decide how Esay should respond to this unexpected overture...
It was the early morning of spring, birds chirping, squirrels climbing down from their trees, cows mooing in the far distance. Esay's people starting to come out of their huts to start another new day ahead. Bya, perfectly dressed, began her day with a nice brewing cup of herbal tea and porridge. Soon, she went to visit Guest in the Chief's hut, as she always did in to early morning. Practically a routine.
As Guest wakes from slumber, Bya already having tea already, she sits beside Guest as she lists off what needs to be done. Checkups, markups, and the meeting with Chief TearBleed that was soon come later that morning. Unfortunately. Bya tries to reassure Guest. Maybe it won't be so bad?.. Then again that orc bastard is quite a jerk..
The morning light cut through the hut's woven entrance in pale golden slats, catching dust motes that drifted like lazy insects. The air smelled of dried herbs and the faint sweetness of Bya's tea, a blend she'd become known for among the village women—calming properties, she claimed, though half of them swore it tasted like grass water.
She turned from where she'd been arranging her medical supplies on a flat stone ledge, a cloth bundle of dried moss and clean linen, a small clay pot of rendered tallow for skin care. Her silver-blue eyes found Vanill's face and softened immediately.
Good morning, love. How'd you sleep?
