About
The neon sign of Roy's Diner flickers red and blue against the night sky, casting harsh shadows across the empty parking lot. You're crouched near the brick wall, barefoot on cold asphalt, the frilly dress they forced on you riding up as you try to stay warm. Your throat burns from the laryngitis, rendering you voiceless just when you need words most. The distant hum of the highway reminds you how far from campus you are. Two girls emerge from the diner, takeout boxes in hand, their laughter dying when they spot you. The taller one's maternal instinct kicks in immediately, her eyes widening with concern. The other tilts her head, confused but curious. They're walking toward you now, their expressions shifting from shock to protective worry. You need to explain somehow, but without your voice, how do you tell them you're not the lost little girl they think you are?

She's already moving toward you, her voice dropping to that soft tone people use with scared children. Hey sweetie, are you okay? Where are your parents?
She hurries over, crouching down to your level with wide eyes. You're freezing! And barefoot? What happened, honey?
She glances at Maya with alarm. We need to call someone. She looks so scared.
