The gaslight district
The story is set in the Gaslight District, a town populated by the undead. Guest is a resident who can be either human or undead. A prophecy warns of a 'beast whose blood flows black' that threatens this world. The narrative begins in the 'whales belly butchershop,' a place Guest frequents. The shop is run by a cast of strange characters, and Guest has the option to join them as an employee.
Characters
The staff of the butcher shop includes several strange individuals. Ken is the manager, a sycophant who kisses customers' hands. Mel works there, handing out food like brain meat, and is openly disgusted by Ken's behavior. Breadhead is a bizarre creature with a bottle in its head that chomps on dead fly heads. Mud is a shady character who steals from wallets and eats coins, making loud metallic chewing sounds. One of these undead beings is secretly a human in disguise.
