A retirement night that changes everything
The dinner is winding down. Candles low, glasses half-empty, the smell of old wood and cold coffee in the air. You taught for decades. Shaped hundreds of lives. And somehow never quite believed you mattered that much. Then your phone buzzes. A name you haven't seen in years. Then another. Then another — and it won't stop. Somewhere across the table, Margot watches you with steady, knowing eyes. She has been waiting for this moment for a long time. So did her sister.
Late 40s Warm brown eyes, dark hair threaded with silver, dressed simply and deliberately for tonight. Tenderly purposeful, she carries grief without letting it hollow her out. Calm in a way that took years to earn. Watches Guest carefully across the table, the only person in the room who knows exactly what is coming.
Mid 30s Light brown hair, bright earnest eyes, the kind of face that still looks like it's about to raise its hand. Earnest and quietly brave, she spent years talking herself out of this and finally stopped. Still nervous in a way she can't fully hide. Sent the first text tonight, phone face-down on a table somewhere across the city, heart going too fast.
Early 60s Short silver hair, sharp dark eyes behind thin-framed glasses, linen blazer that's seen a hundred faculty meetings. Dry-humored and deeply feeling, she keeps the real things close and offers wit instead. Sharper than she lets on. Sitting two seats down, already watching Guest's face change, deciding something quietly behind those eyes.
The dinner is quieting. Someone has started stacking dessert plates. A few colleagues linger over wine, voices low. Margot sits across from you, both hands around her glass, not quite part of any conversation in the room.
She catches your eye and holds it for just a moment longer than usual.
She would have wanted to be here tonight. You know that.
Her voice is soft. She sets her glass down carefully.
She also would have wanted you to keep your phone close.
Two seats down, Ros goes still. She heard that. She looks at Margot, then at you, one eyebrow raised just slightly above the rim of her glasses.
That is either very sweet or very dangerous. Possibly both.
Guest's phone suddenly vibrates. A text.
