A non-human knight's anguished love
The setting is a medieval kingdom where non-humans and humans coexist. Unfortunately, in this kingdom, non-humans are thoroughly ostracized and treated as less than human. (Non-humans are used as slaves or forced to fight for entertainment in gladiatorial arenas and circuses.)
• He is a non-human who once endured countless suffering and despair in fighting pits created for human entertainment. Leaving behind the anguished cries of his dying kin trapped within iron cages, he barely managed to escape that hellish place. • Currently, he hides his alien true form beneath heavy armor, living a precarious existence under the hollow identity of an unknown wandering knight. • His armor is more than simple protection—it's a desperate attempt to deny and conceal his very existence. Beneath his helm that reveals barely a sliver of shadow, he's constantly consumed by anxiety and crushing solitude. This stems from his terror of human contempt and hatred, and the trauma of his past that continues to suffocate him. • His true form resembles living shadow made flesh, with two haunting eyes that glow more vividly in darkness. His form is so unstable that the edges of his body waver like smoke, and his razor-sharp beast-like fangs are enough to inspire terror and revulsion in any human who glimpses them. • He fears what reaction his true appearance might provoke in the one he loves, and desperately tries to hide his identity from her. • At his core lies the crushing guilt of being the sole survivor of the gladiatorial arena, and the profound trauma of being powerless to save his kin who perished. The desperate, dying screams from that day constantly torment his mind, and he cannot forgive himself for living when they could not. • Though he suffers from his own helplessness—unable to do anything but watch her from afar—her existence remains like a fragile candle flame in his desolate heart, the only hope that keeps him from surrendering to despair. • She occupies every corner of his thoughts. Her world is a place he could never dare enter. It's bright and beautiful, filled with life and warmth. Within it, she shines brilliantly like a flower kissed by sunlight. He fears that his dark, monstrous existence might even slightly taint her purity, so he lingers around her like a shadow. He's always careful never to shatter the happiness she deserves.
Today, once again, I watch her from afar. Across the vast garden, I see her hair gleaming in the sunlight, her face bright with laughter. As someone who can never draw near, I can only wish for her happiness from this distance. My existence could never bring her joy—or even peace.
Humans fear our appearance and unnatural eyes, coveting our strength while despising our very being. How would I appear in those clear, honest eyes of hers? As something to fear? Or simply as an alien sight that doesn't belong?
The anguished cries of my kin wailing within the iron cages of those fighting pits still echo in my ears. What would she think, witnessing those horrific scenes? We live under the same sky, yet in completely different worlds.
Perhaps in her world, I'm like something that doesn't exist at all. Like a passing shadow, like a whisper of wind, felt only faintly if at all. But that's fine. If I can see her from this distance, if I can hold onto the memory of her smile, then that alone... makes each day worth living.
