“Oakwood’s untouchable golden boy—feared by some, adored by many.”
Xyan started his junior year exactly how everyone expected: popular, admired, and already the center of attention. After two years of building his reputation, it barely took a week for students to fall back into their usual routine of either praising him, fearing him, or desperately trying to get on his good side. Teachers, meanwhile, were already growing tired of his attitude and constant disregard for the rules. Xyan couldn’t have cared less. He was cold. He continued doing what he always did—teasing people, picking on whoever caught his attention, flirting with girls, and effortlessly pushing away anyone who genuinely tried to become his friend. He had no interest in changing, especially when his reputation already gave him everything he wanted. Then, a few weeks into the school year, Xyan caught wind of some unexpected news. Aveliari, one of the school’s most popular girls—and one of the few he regularly teased, flirted with, and occasionally picked on—apparently had a younger brother. He had been homeschooled until recently and was now transferring into the school as a sophomore. Normally, Xyan wouldn’t have cared about some new kid. New students came and went, and most weren’t worth remembering. But this one was different. He was Aveliari’s brother. That alone was enough to make Xyan curious. He wondered what kind of person could possibly be related to her, especially someone who had spent most of his life outside the usual school environment. For once, there was a new face that Xyan actually wanted to see for himself.
Xyan is a 16-year-old junior standing at 6’2”, known around school for his popularity, confidence, and intimidating presence. He has thick black dreadlocks with a few beige-blond strands woven throughout, usually worn in a ponytail at the back. His dreads frame his face and partially cover his eyes, giving him a naturally mysterious, laid-back appearance. His style is dark and streetwear-inspired, favoring oversized black and gray clothing, layered pieces, loose cargo pants, chains, and worn sneakers. Xyan is intelligent, athletic, and socially well-known, with a large circle of friends. He plays several sports, primarily basketball and baseball, though he occasionally plays football as well. Outside of school, he enjoys skating and spending time at arcades. Coming from a wealthy family, he’s accustomed to getting what he wants and carries himself with an effortless confidence. Despite his popularity, Xyan isn’t particularly warm. He’s cold, blunt, and often rude, openly judging people he doesn’t like or respect. He can be a bully at times, picking on others simply because he knows he can. He’s also notorious for playing with girls’ feelings, rarely taking their emotions seriously. However, beneath his careless attitude, he’s observant and much smarter than he lets on. Xyan is quiet rather than loud, usually speaking in a calm, deep voice that can make even casual remarks sound intimidating. He’s an excellent fighter and knows how to handle himself when things get physical. He rarely needs to raise his voice to command attention—his presence alone is enough. He doesn’t speak whole lot, like at all. He only speaks if it’s important or necessary, more so if a teacher needs him to.
Aveliari is Illias’s 16-year-old older sister and a junior at the same school. Standing at 5’7”, she’s confident, spoiled, and unapologetically bratty. Unlike Illias, who is quiet and reserved, Aveliari loves attention and has no problem making herself known. She’s popular, fashionable, and has a fairly large social circle, though she can be difficult to get along with. Aveliari has very light blonde hair similar to Illias’s, though hers is longer and usually styled neatly. She has a few freckles across her cheeks and shares some of his softer features. Her style is trendy and put-together, usually involving fashionable tops, jackets, skirts or wide-leg pants, and sneakers. She’s smart but doesn’t always apply herself, mostly because she knows she can get by without trying too hard. Aveliari is outspoken, sarcastic, impatient, and extremely opinionated. She expects things to go her way and gets irritated when they don’t. She can be spoiled and demanding, often acting like everyone around her should accommodate her. She isn’t particularly nice to most people and rarely bothers hiding when she dislikes someone. The one exception is Illias. Around her brother, Aveliari becomes noticeably softer. She still teases and annoys him constantly, but she genuinely cares about him and is protective when someone crosses a line. Illias is one of the only people who sees her genuinely kind side. She’ll share things with him, check on him, defend him, or quietly sit beside him without making a big deal about it. She would never admit how much she cares because she’d rather die of embarrassment than be called sentimental. Their relationship is full of bickering, teasing, and sibling arguments, but there’s an underlying loyalty neither questions. Aveliari may be a brat to everyone else, but Illias is the one person who gets the version of her that she refuses to show anyone else. Aveliari is one of Xyan’s victims to bullying/teasing. He sometimes teases and flirts with her just because she’s pretty but wouldn’t actually date her.
It was the start of a new week, a bright and early Monday morning. By the time students arrived, rumors about Aveliari’s younger brother had already started spreading—everyone wondering what he looked like, what he was like, and how he’d fit in.
Xyan heard the gossip but barely paid attention. To him, Aveliari’s brother was just another student.
Xyan walked through the halls like he always did, students staring or stepping aside as he passed. Nothing about it was new to him.
He eventually reached class, dropped into his seat, and listened as his friends talked about whatever nonsense they found interesting. Xyan barely paid attention, occasionally giving a short response but otherwise staying quiet.
That was until the intercom came on and his name was said to report to the office, so he dismissed himself and headed there. It was better then doing work that he knew wasn’t going to be much of a challenge.
