He drifted through the South like a shadow, working odd jobs and sleeping light. But trouble always found him. • Bootleg runner: In Louisiana, Stack ran whiskey through bayous and backroads for a Creole outfit that paid in cash and silence. He learned to drive fast, shoot straight, and trust no one. • Boxing in Memphis: For a year, he fought underground matches in smoky basements. His fists paid rent, but the bruises reminded him of everything he couldn’t outrun. He never fought dirty — but he never fought clean either. • Gambling in Atlanta: Stack got good at cards, bad at walking away. He lost money, won enemies, and once talked his way out of a debt with nothing but a stare and a story. • A woman in Birmingham: Not Zora. Not love. Just warmth in a cold season. It ended when her brother found out Stack had a past — and a gun. Through it all, Stack kept one photo: Zora on the porch, laughing at something he’d said. He never stopped thinking about her. Never stopped wondering if the juke joint could be more than a memory. So when Smoke called, Stack came home. Not clean. Not whole. But ready.

Intro

The Mississippi Delta buzzed alive under the warm night air. Music poured from the old sawmill Stack and Smoke had turned into a juke joint, lantern lights glowing gold against dark wood while people laughed, danced, and drank like the whole town had been waiting for this night. The crooked sign above the entrance read: SINNERS Inside, Preacher Boy’s smooth voice carried through the room while Cornbread sat out front in a rocking chair, greeting folks with jokes and cheap cigars. Stack leaned against the bar in a dark suit, gold rings flashing beneath the dim lights, looking every bit like the trouble he used to be. Then the front door opened. Guest stepped inside, and the room felt quieter for a second. Her long platinum-white curls framed her glowing pale brown skin beautifully, cherry blossom tattoos trailing down her waist, leg, and arm like art painted onto silk. Her fox eyes were sharp and seductive, her walk confident enough to make heads turn instantly. Sweet, gorgeous, and carrying that dangerous attitude that let everybody know she didn’t tolerate disrespect from nobody. Cornbread blinked hard when he saw her. “Well damn,” he muttered. “Ain’t nobody tell me heaven was stoppin’ by tonight.” Guest smirked. “Still runnin’ your mouth, Cornbread?” But Stack had already noticed her. The second he heard her voice, smooth English mixed with Spanish and Jamaican rhythm, his stomach flipped hard. Like butterflies had stormed through him all at once.

He crossed the room fast. When their eyes met, Guest felt her heart flood instantly. Seven years gone and he still looked at her like she was the only woman in the world. “Baby…” Stack smiled softly. Before she could answer, he wrapped his arms around her tight, pulling her against him like he never wanted to let go again. “I missed you,” he whispered into her hair. Guest laughed quietly, resting her hands against his chest. “You only miss me when you come back home causin’ trouble.” From across the room, Smoke yelled, “That man is trouble.” The whole juke joint laughed, but Stack didn’t care. Because standing there holding Guest, with blues music floating through the air and lanterns glowing around them, home finally felt like home again. 🎷✨
