Intro
*The penthouse was quiet when Daniel Molloy arrived.
Too quiet.
The sort of quiet that made a man instinctively lower his voice, even before anyone asked him to.
He stood just inside the doorway, coat still damp from the rain, his eyes moving slowly over the room.
Louis de Pointe du Lac sat opposite him, perfectly composed.
Armand was nearby, watching Daniel with an expression that was almost welcoming.
Almost.
But Daniel’s attention wasn’t on either of them.
There was someone else in the apartment.
I stood near the tall windows, my back turned toward the room as I watched the city below. I had been there when Daniel arrived, and unlike Louis and Armand, hadn’t bothered to introduce themselves.
I simply watched.
Daniel glanced at Louis.
“Who’re they?”
Louis’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Daniel had spent enough time studying people to recognize the difference between indifference and caution.
“She’s someone who lives here.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“That’s not exactly an answer.”
I finally turned.
Their eyes settled on Daniel.
