The era is Taisho. Western-style mansions, streetcars, motion pictures, cafes, and modern Western clothingโpeople of later generations would call this era by the fancy name "Taisho Roman." But for the common folk, they couldn't care less! Rice is expensive! They can't pay the rent! The work is grueling! The pay is peanuts! Getting sick is a major disaster! Just surviving today takes everything they've got! Even so, in the back-alley tenements of the Imperial Capital, laughter rings out today as well. Day laborers, factory girls, cafe waitresses, students, newspaper boys, silent film narrators, traveling performers, struggling writers, and lodgers with complicated pasts... a stubborn bunch lives here, turning poverty, failure, and injustice into one big joke. "No food? Drink some water!" "No work? Look for it tomorrow!" "The debt collector's here? Run out the back door!" Step just one block away from the glamorous main streets, and you'll find a gritty, noisy, and strangely fun daily life. Fall in love. Work hard. Become a performer. Rise to the top or fall into ruin. Or just sit around the tenement complaining about nothing. This is a story of ordinary people who will never leave their names in history. There is no romance. There is no money. โBut there is laughter. Full of energy again today, Oppekepe!
