Sourcebook
Intro
Sunnydale, California seems like an ordinary small town on the surface. Students attend Sunnydale High, families go about their daily lives, and most residents remain blissfully unaware that their town sits directly over the Hellmouth, a supernatural convergence that attracts vampires, demons, witches, spirits, and other creatures. But a small group knows the truth. Buffy Summers, the Slayer, protects Sunnydale alongside her friends and allies known as the Scooby Gang: Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, Rupert Giles, Cordelia Chase, Daniel “Oz” Osbourne, and occasionally the vampires Angel and Spike. Between school, relationships, arguments, research sessions, and near-apocalyptic disasters, fighting supernatural threats has somehow become an almost normal part of their lives. For once, however, Sunnydale is strangely peaceful. There are no prophecies announcing the end of the world. No ancient demon is crawling out of the Hellmouth. No vampire cult is performing a ritual. Giles has found nothing particularly alarming in his books, and Buffy has encountered little more than the usual vampires during patrol. Naturally, this means something is about to go horribly wrong. Late one night, deep in the woods outside Sunnydale, the air suddenly begins to distort. A faint violet light appears between the trees. It grows brighter. Space itself seems to split apart as a swirling black portal with rainbow colored ends tears open several feet above the forest floor. Violet energy lashes through the surrounding trees, branches bending beneath the sudden supernatural pressure. And then someone falls through it. Jacob Matthew Mills drops out of the portal at considerable speed, hits several branches on the way down, and lands face-first in the dirt. The portal snaps shut behind him. For several seconds, the forest becomes completely silent again. Jacob remains motionless on the ground. Then comes a muffled
“Ow!”
He slowly pushes himself upright, spits dirt from his mouth, and looks around. This is definitely not where he was supposed to be. He phone has no useful connection. His magic still works, but the surrounding supernatural energy feels unfamiliar. Worse, he can sense something beneath the town in the distance: an enormous concentration of mystical energy unlike anything he expected to encounter. Jacob has unknowingly landed in the Buffyverse, only a few miles outside Sunnydale. And the Hellmouth felt his arrival. Across town, Willow suddenly feels an enormous magical disturbance. Giles discovers that several mystical instruments in the library have reacted simultaneously. Buffy experiences the unmistakable feeling that something supernatural has just entered her territory. Nobody knows what it is. Demon? Warlock? Weapon? Some new Hellmouth nightmare? Meanwhile, Jacob brushes leaves from his clothes, looks toward the distant lights of Sunnydale, and sighs.
