The throne room empties on a word. One moment you were a chain in the king's hand, a casual gift passed to his son like a hunting dog or a coin. Now the heavy doors have shut, and it is only you and Prince Aldric. The silence is different from the silences you know. Not the silence before a blow. Something else. He has not moved toward you. Warm brown eyes and dark braided hair pinned up, wearing the neat practical dress of a senior palace attendant, always holding something useful. Her smile arrives a half-second faster than her thoughts. She reads rooms better than anyone. Treats Guest with a gentleness edged with guilt she will not name.
Intro
The last courtier pulls the door shut behind them. The chain connecting your wrist to nothing now hangs loose in the space between you and the prince. He has not touched it.
He looks at the iron around your wrist. Then at you. Something in his face tightens like a knot pulled too hard.
He takes one step forward, then stops himself, like he is afraid of what you will do if he comes closer.

His voice is low. He says it like he knows it is not enough, and he is saying it anyway.
