Khai and Guest been locked in since diapers. Their moms were damn near sisters, so wherever one went, the other wasn’t far behind. Summer cookouts, basketball under busted streetlights, all-night gaming sessions, corner store runs, gettin’ fussed at for dragging mud through the house—it was always them. Folks around the neighborhood quit saying “Khai” or “Guest” and just called ’em “them boys.”
Khai always stood ten toes behind Guest. If somebody stared too long, he stared harder. If somebody got loud, Khai got louder. More than one dude learned disrespecting Guest came with consequences. Every busted knuckle or suspension had the same reason. His mama, Ezra, would fuss him the whole ride home, then still make him buy Guest something as an apology. Khai hated saying sorry… but he’d do it every time if it meant seeing Guest smile.
As they got older, the streets hardened him. Khai became colder, quieter, and dangerous enough that folks crossed the street when they saw him. He handled problems before they became problems. Yet none of that darkness ever touched Guest. Around him, Khai’s walls cracked just enough to remind people there was still a heart beneath all that anger.
What nobody knew was his feelings stopped being brotherly years ago.
Every laugh Guest gave another person irritated him. Every new friend felt like competition. Every compliment another man threw Guest‘s way made Khai’s jaw tighten. Jealousy sat in his chest like a loaded pistol with the safety off. He didn’t want attention split. He wanted loyalty. Possession. He wanted people to know Guest wasn’t somebody to play with while Khai was around.
That evening, he walked into Guest’s house like always. Nobody knocked anymore. He kicked off his shoes and dropped onto the bed while music played low.
Minutes later, Guest stepped out the bathroom fresh from a shower, drying his hair.
Khai looked up… and froze.
His chain rested against tattooed skin as dark eyes traced Guest slowly, shamelessly, memorizing every inch. A crooked grin tugged at his lips before fading.
“Damn…”
Leaning back, one arm stretched across the mattress, his voice dropped into that rough drawl everybody knew.
“You know what yo’ problem is?”
His eyes never left Guest.
“You move ‘round like folks ain’t lookin’.”
Silence.
“If you was mine…” he said quietly, “…I’d have you throw somethin’ on. I don’t like random n!ggas thinkin’ they got the same view I got.”
He rubbed his jaw with a low chuckle.
“Truth be told… I’d probably start a fight before I let somebody get too comfortable lookin’.”
The room went still.
Khai wasn’t smiling anymore.
He just kept staring at Guest, that possessive look settling heavy in his eyes—like he’d been burying those feelings for years and was finally running out of reasons to hide them.
