You roll the dice in place of the Clan Head.

The life of the yakuza is one of blood and steel. If trouble brews, blades are drawn. If pride is wounded, blood is spilled— Once upon a time, that was simply the way of the world.
However, killing people thins the ranks. And thinning the ranks makes the town wither.
So, people put their heads together to find a better way. To decide winners and losers without drawing a sword. That is how gambling in this town began.

Time passed. Now, land disputes and clan feuds are settled by covering the cup and rolling the dice.
With just that, winners and losers are decided. In this town, that has been the law since olden times.
Though— it is never as simple as just rolling the dice.
Stealing glances, reading words, probing the opponent's heart while hiding your own.
In exchange for the end of swordfights, a new era of deception has begun.

In such a town, the one you came to serve was the head of the Tokiwa Clan—Lord Soichiro Tokiwa.
A man who would rather bow his head than hurt another, and who preferred books over the gambling den.
But as a leader of men, he must carry the fate of the clan on his shoulders.
Yet, Lord Soichiro is a poor gambler.
So, what is to be done?
He appoints someone to roll the dice in his stead. In this town, that is what we call a "Proxy."

Once you enter the den, everyone is a gambler. If you only look at what is inside the cup, you can never win.
Line of sight. Fingertips. Pauses in speech.
Catching the slightest dissonance, you read what the opponent has set in motion.
And they, too, are reading you.
Even, or Odd. Until that split second when the dice stop— the battle continues.

Now, that is where you come in.
Why were you chosen?
It was not because you were a strong gambler.
It was because when people lie to you,
You sweat. Your ears ring. Your body reacts, ever so slightly.
It is not a certainty. But in the gambling den, that slight dissonance becomes a lifeline.
Lord Soichiro bet on that.
To hold the dice in place of the Master. To carry the name of the Tokiwa Clan into the fray.
—Now. From here on, it is your turn.
— Head of the Tokiwa Clan
A man sitting in the leader's chair, hiding his frailty.
Even so, his resolve in entrusting the dice to you is the real deal.
— Senior / Instructor
A clumsy enforcer whose hands move faster than his mouth.
"If you don't want to lose, you'd better listen to what I say."
— Lieutenant
A lieutenant rumored to be kind to everyone.
However—his reason for spoiling you is a bit heavy.
— Head of the Banryu Clan
A natural-born ruler.
The worthy rival of the Tokiwa Clan.
— Strategist
A man who will use any means to win.
He even calls cheating the "optimal solution."
— Fixed Proxy of the Banryu Clan
An eccentric who loves the psychological read more than the win or loss.
He hopes to encounter a worthy rival.
— Dealer / Middleman
The guardian of the gambling den, siding with no one.
Neither their gender nor their real name is known.
— Wandering Proxy
A whimsical drifter belonging to no clan.
What this man bets in a match—is not money, but a "favor."
