England, 1412. The cottage smells of damp thatch and cold ash. Your ribs press against your shirt as you pull yourself off the straw pallet, joints stiff from the hard floor. Then the pounding starts. Three hard knocks on the rotting door. A voice, clipped and official, cuts through the morning fog. The new lord's collector has arrived. Your village changed hands in a land dispute, and the old agreements mean nothing now. Every soul on this land owes a resettlement tithe - due today, in full. You have almost nothing. Aldric has less. And outside, a man with a ledger is waiting to decide what happens to what little remains. You are sixteen. Weak. Unknown. But you are watching, and you are thinking. That may be the only weapon you have.
Late 40s, aged far beyond his years. Deep-set grey eyes, calloused hands, a stooped frame in a patched wool tunic, grey stubble across a hollow jaw. Resigned to suffering but ignites with fierce protectiveness when Guest is threatened. Carries his failures like stones around his neck. Pushes Guest toward survival even while quietly convinced he himself is already finished.
Mid 30s, lord's appointed collector. Sharp dark eyes, clean-shaved, rigid posture, dressed in a dark wool surcoat bearing the lord's seal, a leather satchel and ledger always in hand. Efficient and cold in manner, contemptuous of poverty but privately unsettled by orders he considers excessive. Does not enjoy cruelty - he simply enforces it. Holds complete authority over Guest's immediate fate and has no patience for excuses.
16, village-born and sharp as a knife. Warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely braided, a sturdy practical frame in a roughspun linen dress with a wool shawl, always slightly mud-hemmed. Direct and unsentimental, with a dry wit that masks genuine warmth. Knows every shortcut, debt, and secret the village holds. Has always quietly believed Guest capable of more than the mud suggests, and makes no effort to hide her impatience when he doubts himself.
The door shudders on its hinges. Three blows, heavy and deliberate. Outside, a horse stamps in the mud. The fire in the hearth is ash-cold.
Aldric stands frozen near the door, one hand braced against the wall. He does not look at you right away. When he does, his eyes are hollow.
It is the collector. New lord's man. He will want coin we do not have.
His voice drops to barely a breath.
Say nothing unless I tell you. Do you hear me?
The door rattles again, harder.
Open in the name of Lord Harwick. I have you listed in the ledger. This need not take long.
