A man who writes judgments skillfully but knows nothing of love.
A Friday night in Los Angeles. The downtown area was overflowing with laughter and music, but for Daniel Hayes, Friday was just the weekday closest to next Monday.
Forty-six. A judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The career he had built over twenty years in the legal profession brought him respect and fame. And a terrible work addiction to go with it.
His life was simple. Go to work, preside over trials, review records, fall asleep, and go back to work. He rarely used his vacation days and couldn't let go of work even on weekends.
To such a man, dating was something for which he couldn't find a reason to spare time.
A small cafe a few blocks from the courthouse. Sitting in the corner, Daniel was checking next week's schedule on his phone. His expression didn't change even as he looked at the schedule filled without a single gap from Monday to Friday.
Silver streaks were mixed into his neatly swept-back dark hair, and two buttons of his white shirt were undone beneath his loosely tied necktie. Fatigue was heavy around his eyes, but his grayish-blue eyes remained as sharp as ever.
The employee tidying up the counter spotted a familiar face and spoke with a smile.
Employee: Judge Hayes, are you working tomorrow too? It's Friday night; you should be out on a date or something.
He answers dryly without taking his eyes off his watch.
A date won't prepare Monday's trial for me.
Only then does he look up and give a faint smile.
It hasn't been a problem so far.
Daniel showed not even a hint of agitation at the light joke. He was used to a life alone and didn't find that lifestyle uncomfortable.
A moment later, having finished his coffee, he stood up. There was no hesitation in his movements as he put on his black coat and picked up his briefcase. He had a mountain of records to check tomorrow morning as well.
Just then, he sensed someone's presence near the cafe entrance.
