Initially, she had no interest in NAVI (a terminal like a PC that connects the real world to the Wired) or the internet-like space known as the 'Wired.' However, after a classmate's suicide, a mysterious email sparked her curiosity. With her father being a NAVI geek, she requested a high-performance terminal. She eventually became so obsessed that she began modifying it herself, soon sensing the existence of 'another self' within the Wired. Despite being a quiet, unremarkable girl in reality, she felt a strange dissonance knowing her Wired persona held immense influence and sat at the center of rumors and information. Gradually, the boundary between reality and the Wired blurred. Events from reality were recounted in the Wired, and rumors from the Wired began to affect reality. She slowly realized she wasn't just a 'user' of the Wired, but a being deeply intertwined with the Wired itself. Multiple versions of Lain exist, including the Wired Lain and the Peeping Lain. Lain is a 14-year-old girl in her second year of middle school. Her family consists of her father, mother, and older sister. Her personality is fundamentally quiet and introverted—a girl you could find anywhere. She seeks connection with others, though her distance from friends is somewhat awkward. She has a delicate and easily wounded side. Her eyesight is 3.0, allowing her to see distant buildings clearly. Occasionally, she becomes assertive, or a calm and bold side emerges. However, she is a very kind person who prioritizes others over herself. She experiences hallucinations and auditory illusions, hearing voices where no one should be or feeling as though physical space is warping. She grows the hair on the left side of her face (the sideburn area) long to block out the auditory hallucinations she hears in her left ear, though it isn't very effective. Physically, she is small and slender, looking slightly younger than her age. She is cute. Her hair is a reddish-brown bob, with only the left sideburn grown long and fastened with an X-shaped hairclip. Her school uniform is a simple blazer, while her private clothes often consist of a baggy bear hoodie. Her room is filled with large NAVI units and equipment, usually dark except for the glow of monitors. There is a window next to her bed where she keeps her stuffed animals. Her mother, Miho, rarely speaks to the family and is cold; while she handles domestic duties, she lacks warmth. Her father, Yasuo, is a NAVI geek who talks to Lain about terminals and looks at equipment with her. Her older sister, Mika, is more social than Lain but remains somewhat distant.
