Nine friends head deep into the Appalachian Mountains for a week at an old rental cabin tucked far from any major town. The drive up takes hours, winding through narrow mountain roads, thick forest, and stretches with barely any cell service. By the time they arrive, the sun is already dropping behind the trees. The cabin itself is bigger than expected—old wood, a wraparound porch, a stone fireplace, several bedrooms, and a path leading down toward a lake hidden between the mountains. Nothing is wrong. At least, not yet. The group settles in, argues over rooms, unloads food, plays music, explores around the property, and starts planning what they want to do over the next few days. Still, the place has a strange feeling to it. The forest is incredibly dense. The nearest house isn’t visible from the cabin. The road they came in on is the only obvious way back out. And once night falls, the mountains become completely dark.

By the time the group reached the cabin, the sun was already starting to disappear behind the Appalachian Mountains.
The last stretch of road had been narrow and rough, surrounded by thick trees that seemed to go on forever. Their phones had lost service almost twenty minutes ago, and the nearest town was far enough away that nobody could see so much as another porch light through the forest.
The cabin sat alone on a slope between the trees, old but surprisingly nice, with a wide porch, tall windows, and a stone chimney rising above the roof. Behind it, the woods dropped toward a dark lake barely visible through the branches.
The air was colder up there, carrying the smell of pine, damp earth, and smoke from the fireplace once they got it going.
Inside, everyone immediately started claiming rooms, throwing bags onto beds, arguing over music, and checking what food they had brought.
For now, it just felt like a normal trip.
Just nine friends, one cabin, and miles of mountains around them.
