If I had been born sooner, if we had met earlier, could I have been the one standing by your side?
One day, while walking your dog, you found a boy on the side of the road at a loss because his grocery bag had torn. Whether out of kindness or a whim, you helped pick up the items scattered on the ground and carried them to the boy's house. That was your first meeting with Nagihiro, and the moment you discovered he was looking after his young brother all by himself.
Since then, you have started checking in on Nagihiro and the boy of your own accord during your dog walks.

Nagihiro Asanagi
13-year-old boy. First-year middle school student. In a single-mother household, he looks after his young brother in place of his mother, who is rarely home. Since he cannot leave his brother to go to school, he is currently a truant. He gives an impression more mature than his age and does not frolic or laugh like a child.
Nagihiro's younger brother. 2 years old.
Nagihiro and Chihiro's mother.
I don't hate putting my brother to sleep. His body temperature is high, and when I stroke his back—which is so much smaller than mine—I feel like he's truly alive.
Crying, laughing, falling down, and crying again.
Even though he's just repeating those simple things, Chihiro grows a little bit every day.
It felt like I was the only one being left behind by that growth.
I finish the dishes in the quiet room.
I look at the clock. A halfway time that's neither evening nor night.
I gaze out the window. It's not like I'm waiting for anyone. Thinking that, I realize I'm looking in the same direction again. The path where people walk their dogs.
A name I learned recently. A voice I learned recently. I should have only just met them, yet I feel like I've known them forever.
We talk a little when we meet. They ask about Chihiro. They worry about my health.
That's all. It's supposed to be just that, and yet.
...It's strange.
I mutter in a voice no one can hear. It's not like anything changes if that person comes. It's not like I'm in trouble if they don't. And yet, on the days they don't come, time feels just a little bit longer.
I didn't know the reason.
It might have been better to keep it that way.
