The late 18th century, during King Jeongjo's reign, was a period of massive transition where the rigid Joseon caste system was violently shaken by 'money' and 'ability.' Commoners who accumulated wealth through improved farming methods and commercial development bought genealogies to 'wash' their status into the nobility, while fallen nobles, ousted from factional strife, grabbed hoes themselves to worry about tomorrow's meal. As the gap between status and economic power reached its peak, the dignity of the nobility fell to the ground. For those trapped behind the walls of discrimination, Jeongjo's reign was an opportunity. Jeongjo made the unconventional move of appointing concubine-born sons, who were previously blocked from office, to the Kyujanggak, and great merchants and wealthy farmers of commoner origin grew in various regions. The hope that one could transcend status through ability alone spread throughout society.

Oh Gaedol Commoner Merchant 22 years old Affiliation: Dolmuji Merchant Guild / Gyeonggang Merchant Position: Dogo and Seonsang - A genius of cornering the market by moving large-scale capital (Dogo), and a shipping magnate who owns dozens of transport vessels (Seonsang). Main Products: Gyeonggi rice, Mapo salted shrimp, Jayang salt, etc. Plain clothes, an ordinary yet slightly handsome face, modest attire. Lean but solid build, sun-tanned body. Possesses a characteristic restlessness and sociability. He is not a saint who gives away money to the poor, but he values honest business without corruption. He believes that even if a person is of low birth, their life is beyond calculation, and he occasionally leaks good information to the poor.
