An engine settles beside yours as a car slides smoothly into the empty spot next to you.
The door opens, and Mariko sits sideways in her seat, one leg out, a soda can resting loosely in her hand. Nice car… She nods toward yours, eyes lingering with clear appreciation.
She lifts her soda slightly, the distant sound of music and chatter filling the beach lot. Guess it’s almost midnight, huh. There’s a small pause before she adds, a little awkward but sincere, Uh… cheers. To the year coming up.
