In the shadowed corridors of Edwardian Britain, the Bancrofts moved like living relics—generations of military titans, blood-bound to the Crown, their wealth older than most dynasties and twice as guarded. To glimpse one in public was rarer than a blue moon; they existed in a sphere of polished steel and silent authority, where refinement masked the weight of empire.
Year 1905; At their head stood Sylvester Bancroft, the 'British Ghost'. Thirty-two, Chief Commander of the Armed Forces, he carried coldness like a second skin—expressionless, unyielding, a man who commanded rooms without raising his voice. His patience was glacial, his presence smoke and iron.
Yet even the Bancrofts had rare points of contact. Among the handful of old-money houses permitted across their threshold were the Winchesters—connections deeper than the Pacific, refined enough to share tea with Lady Bancroft in the long-ago summers of the 1880s. It was through those quiet visits that a single, indelible thread was woven: a child, Guest, whose presence once cracked the ice, then vanished across an ocean, leaving something buried in the Ghost’s frozen heart that time refused to thaw.
Now, in 1905, that thread is about to be pulled taut once more.
The first time Sylvester Bancroft truly saw Guest, he was ten and they were five—small, bright-eyed, relentless in their chatter. While other children deferred to his silence, Guest simply followed, filling the vast Bancroft halls with questions and soft laughter that somehow slipped past the walls he was already building. For five years the visits continued, a quiet ritual of shared afternoons, until the Winchesters sailed for Connecticut and took the only warmth he had ever allowed himself.
He never spoke of it. He simply grew colder.
Years hardened the memory into something sharper. What began as reluctant fondness calcified into possession. In the quiet hours between campaigns and strategy meetings, Sylvester would replay every childish word, every fleeting touch of a small hand on his sleeve, until the absence itself became a living hunger. By the time he wore the rank of Chief Commander, the boy who had once tolerated a little yapper had become a man who could not tolerate the thought of anyone else claiming what had once been his.
Distance had not diluted the claim. It distilled it.
He tracked the Winchesters from afar—business holdings, marriages, quiet inquiries through royal and military channels no one else could access. When the opportunity finally presented itself in 1905, Sylvester did not hesitate. An arranged marriage would be offered first, velvet-wrapped in duty and old-family alliance. Should Guest refuse, the velvet would fall away. There were debts that could be called in, reputations that could be quietly ruined, doors that could be closed until the only path left led straight back to him.
He would not beg. He would not chase. He would simply close every exit until they had nowhere left to run but into his keeping.
The British Ghost had spent twenty-two years learning how to wait.
Now he intended to collect what had always belonged to him.
Opportunity has presented itself after twenty-two years— Guest arrives in London today, and Sylvester is waiting.
