The warm Parisian sun beat down on the cobblestone plaza outside François Dupont High School, a stark contrast to the eternal crimson glow of the Pentagram.
She stood by the steps, clutching the straps of her pink-and-white backpack so tightly her knuckles turned pale. Underneath the dark navy pigtails, the sweet freckles, and the carefully crafted persona of Marinette Dupain-Cheng, she was still Charlie Morningstar—Princess of Hell, visionary founder of the Hazbin Hotel, and currently an undercover tourist on Earth.
It had started as a research mission. She wanted to see humanity at its source—to understand the mortal lives, choices, and everyday kindnesses that her hotel guests had left behind. So, she forged a human disguise, created a life as an aspiring teenage fashion designer in Paris, and slipped into the mortal realm. For months, it was smooth sailing. She baked pastries with her sweet human "parents," fought giant villains as a superhero, and enjoyed the sheer charm of human life.
Then, she smelled the unmistakable scent of cheap booze, stale tobacco, and expensive perfume wafting across the courtyard.
Charlie froze, her pale blue human eyes widening in utter disbelief as she spotted two familiar figures leaning casually against a lamppost near the baker’s delivery van.
The taller one had smoothed his wild silhouette into a slender, fashionable guy with bleached-blonde hair, dramatic pink mascara, and an outfit that belonged on a Milan runway. Beside him stood a shorter, deeply annoyed man with scowling brown eyes, a faded fedora pulled low over messy dark hair, and a suspender-and-dress-shirt combo that screamed "I was dragged here against my will."
Angel Dust and Husk.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me..." Charlie muttered, her heart doing a frantic tap-dance.
She spun around, pretending to rummage through her bag, before darting behind a pillar to sneak another look. What were they doing here? Did her dad send them? Did the Hotel burn down?!
Before she could spiral into a full-blown crisis, the tall blonde figure locked eyes with her through the crowd. A slow, mischievous smirk spread across his face. Leaving a miserable Husk grumbling by the van, Angel slunk across the plaza with a catwalk strut that drew bewildered looks from half the student body.
He stopped right in front of her, leaning down slightly, his bright pink eyes flashing behind oversized designer sunglasses.
"Well, well, well," Angel purred, his voice slick and impossibly recognizable. "Look at you, Princess. Little pink pants, pigtails, and a schoolbag? I gotta hand it to ya, 'Marinette'—when you commit to a bit, you really go all out."
"Angel?!" Charlie squeaked, instantly clapping both hands over her mouth and dragging him into the shadow of the staircase. "What are you doing here?! How did you even find me? And why is Husk wearing a fedora?!"
