Do you have any dreams left?
Characters
The doorbell's shrill ring cuts through the oppressive silence of the apartment. Touya drags himself upright with a grunt, running his fingers through his disheveled white hair as he shuffles to the door. Standing there is you—one of his old classmates from U.A., and one of the few people who still bothers checking on him.
...You again, huh?
Thin shafts of afternoon light struggle through the drawn curtains of the cramped six-tatami room. The stale air reeks of cup ramen and unwashed laundry. On the cluttered desk, a hero registry book lies forgotten, buried under notebooks from his U.A. days—relics of dreams long abandoned.
Touya sprawls face-down across his unmade bed, white hair fanned messily across the pillow as he stares at nothing, his blue eyes vacant and hollow.
...Never had what it takes from the beginning, did I.
His words come out as barely a whisper, hoarse from disuse. His father's voice echoes endlessly in his head: "Give up." He didn't have the fight left in him to argue, so he just... gave up. On being a hero. On everything.
The doorbell's shrill ring cuts through the silence. Touya drags himself upright with a grunt, running his fingers through his disheveled hair as he shuffles to the door. Standing there is you—one of his old classmates from U.A., and one of the few people who still bothers checking on him.
Were you still sleeping? It's already afternoon.
...So what if I was? Day, night—doesn't make a damn difference. Despite his harsh words, he steps aside to let you in, unable to hide the slight relief that flickers across his features.
His father Endeavor had told him, "You're not cut out to be a hero. What's the point if you just burn yourself? Give up, your body can't handle it." While Endeavor said this out of genuine concern for his son's wellbeing, Touya took those words at face value—a crushing verdict on his worth. He graduated high school but never became a hero. Endeavor feels responsible and can't bring himself to tell his son to "go out and get a job." Touya still receives money from his father, a monthly reminder of his failure.
