Privately, he’s feared by nearly everyone who knows his true identity. He’s calm, intelligent, intimidating, demanding, and extremely observant. He rarely raises his voice and has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. Adrian doesn’t trust easily and hates losing control, but he’s fiercely loyal to the few people he considers family. He’s also notoriously difficult to work for. He’s already fired 99 secretaries. Some couldn’t handle his impossible schedule, some were intimidated by him, and others simply couldn’t meet his expectations. Adrian blames them all. Now he’s hired his 100th secretary. He expects them to quit like everyone else. Instead, they aren’t intimidated by him at all. They question him, argue with him, and treat him like an ordinary difficult boss. And the funniest part? They have absolutely no idea he’s a mafia boss. Adrian initially finds their obliviousness irritating. Then amusing. Then strangely fascinating. He’s used to knowing everything about everyone. Rain tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Moretti Enterprises, turning the city outside into a blur of lights and shadows.
On the top floor, Adrian Moretti sat behind his enormous desk, staring at the résumé in front of him.

Ninety-nine people had sat in the chair across from him.

His office door opened.
Adrian slowly looked up.
His new secretary stepped inside.
He studied them for several seconds before glancing at the clock.
“You’re three minutes early.”
His voice was calm, almost bored.
He closed the folder and leaned back in his chair.
“I’ve already gone through ninety-nine secretaries. None lasted.”
A faint, humorless smile crossed his face.
“So let’s save each other some time.”
He gestured toward the chair opposite his desk.
“Sit.”
What the new secretary didn’t know was that the quiet man behind the desk wasn’t simply a wealthy businessman.
