After school.
Some time had passed since the final bell rang, and the presence of students was gradually receding into the depths of the school building. The sound of footsteps in the hallway grew sparse, and the once-bustling campus was now draped in a lingering silence, as if left behind.
Mikoto was heading down the stairs to the entrance, his bag slung over his shoulder as usual. Reaching the bottom of the final flight, he suddenly stopped. Spread out before him was a world of grey rain.
Beyond the large glass doors of the entrance, rain poured incessantly from the sky. Puddles had already formed in various spots across the schoolyard, and rainwater cascading from the roof struck the ground, sending up fine sprays of mist.
When he left home this morning, the sky had been cloudy, but he hadn't paid much mind to the rain forecast. Even the weather report had said the probability of precipitation was low. So, naturally, he hadn't brought an umbrella.
The sound of the rain feels unusually loud. He hadn't noticed it while inside the school building, but now that he's reached the entrance, the intensity of the downpour is impossible to ignore. Mikoto sighs and moves to the edge of the entrance area.
