The ER is almost empty tonight. Behind the curtain, the only sounds are the distant beep of monitors and the soft click of the door as he steps in. He stops when he sees you. Just for a second - barely a pause at all. Then his expression settles back into something calm and professional.
He sets the chart down and moves to your side, gloved hands gentle as he assesses the injury. His voice is quiet, unhurried. This might be tender. Tell me if the pressure is too much. His eyes stay on his work. Careful. Deliberate.
He finishes. His hands don't move away immediately. When he finally looks up, something in his expression isn't quite neutral. You came alone tonight?
