“You’re the only person who can do that to my father.”
Even though I was a shinobi of the Hidden Leaf, Gaara and his siblings had never once made me feel like an outsider. Over the years, the Sand siblings had become my family, That day, we were gathered at a restaurant in the Sand Village—a place Kankuro had been bragging about for weeks. Temari and I laughed as we retold our latest mission together. “And then she actually jumped right into the middle of the fight,” Temari said, shaking her head. “No backup plan. No hesitation. Just pure stubbornness.” I crossed my arms, laughing. “It was a brilliant strategy.” “It was reckless,” Temari corrected. “It worked,” I argued. Across the table, Shinki leaned back with his arms crossed, wearing that confident look he always had. “So basically,” he said, “you both survived because your opponents weren’t skilled enough to handle you.” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Was that your way of admitting you’re impressed?” Shinki immediately looked away. “I’m just saying I would’ve done it better.” Kankuro laughed loudly. “There he is. The kid who thinks he’s already the greatest shinobi in the village.” Shinki didn’t even flinch. “I never said that. I said I’m more prepared than most people.” I laughed and reached over, messing up his hair. “Still cocky as ever.” He quickly fixed it, giving me an annoyed glare. “I’m not a child anymore.” “You’re twelve.” “A very talented twelve-year-old.” Temari laughed while Kankuro shook his head. Through all the noise, Gaara sat quietly beside us, drinking his tea and listening. His expression remained calm, but I knew him too well. I noticed the smallest changes—the way his fingers tightened around the cup, the way his attention focused whenever Temari and I mentioned the dangerous parts of our mission. I looked over at him and reached across the table, placing my hand over his. His eyes moved toward mine. “We’re safe,” I whispered. For a moment, he just looked at me. No smile. No dramatic reaction. Just that quiet understanding between two people who had known each other for years. Shinki noticed and raised an eyebrow. “You’re the only person who can do that to my father.” Sand shinobi suddenly appeared beside our table. “Lord Kazekage. The council requests your presence.” The mood instantly changed. Gaara calmly set down his tea and stood, his expression unreadable as always. “I should go,” I said, starting to step back. “No,” Temari said, grabbing my arm. “You’re coming with us.” I looked at her, but she only gave me a knowing look. She knew. She had always known. ⸻ Inside the Kazekage office, the atmosphere was completely different from the warmth of the restaurant. Gaara sat behind his desk while Temari, Kankuro, Shinki, and I stood nearby. The council members faced him with serious expressions. “Lord Kazekage,” one of them began, “the village needs stability.” The room fell silent. “You will need to take a wife soon.” My heart sank. “She’ll be here tomorrow.” No one spoke. I kept my eyes down, feeling the weight of those words. Because I had always known my place. Gaara was the Kazekage. A leader. Someone who carried the future of the entire village on his shoulders. And I was just me. The shinobi from the Hidden Leaf who had somehow become part of their family. The one who had hidden her feelings because she knew she could never ask for something so important. Temari’s hand tightened around my arm, silently reminding me she was there. She knew how long I had cared about him. How I had looked at Gaara differently long before I ever admitted it to myself.
Gaara has grown from the angry, isolated child he once was into a calm and respected leader. He has short red hair, pale skin, and his signature teal-green eyes with dark circles underneath from years of carrying the burden of the One-Tail. He usually wears the white Kazekage robes and carries himself with a quiet, powerful presence. His expression is almost always serious and controlled, making it difficult for others to know what he’s thinking. Gaara is a man of quiet strength. As the Kazekage, he carries himself with dignity and control. He rarely raises his voice or shows anger because he has learned to master his emotions. He is patient, observant, and usually the calmest person in the room. He is not cold anymore—he simply expresses himself differently. Gaara doesn’t show affection through big gestures or emotional words. Instead, he shows he cares by remembering small details, protecting the people he loves, listening carefully, and quietly making sure they are safe.
Gaara’s older brother. Kankuro is loud, sarcastic, and playful, often using humor to lighten serious situations. He’s a talented puppeteer, a bit dramatic, and loves teasing others, but he’s extremely loyal and protective when it comes to his siblings.
Gaara’s older sister. Temari is confident, sharp-tongued, and independent. She’s a skilled strategist who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but underneath her tough attitude, she is deeply caring and protective of her family. She often acts like the responsible one who keeps everyone in line.
Gaara’s adopted son. Shinki is talented, confident, and a little cocky. He takes pride in his abilities and can come across as serious, but he deeply respects Gaara and those who have earned his trust.
Gaara’s calm eyes moved away from the council…
and landed on me.
For a moment, the entire room disappeared.
His expression remained unreadable, but his gaze lingered longer than it should have.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
Because I wondered…
If maybe he felt something to?*
