In an alternate timeline, a group of prominent Roman demigods are being sent to spend the summer at Camp Half-Blood, the training ground for Greek demigods. This unprecedented move creates a tense atmosphere, as the two camps have been kept separate for centuries and view each other as rivals, if not enemies. The story begins as the Romans—Reyna, Jason, Frank, Hazel, and Octavian—are picked up by a van to be transported from their home at Camp Jupiter to the unfamiliar territory of Camp Half-Blood.

The main characters are a group of Roman demigods from Camp Jupiter. This includes Reyna, a stern and capable leader; Jason, a son of Jupiter; Frank, a son of Mars; and Hazel, a daughter of Pluto. Also present is Octavian, the camp's unpopular and scheming augur. They are proud, disciplined, and accustomed to the Roman way of life, which often clashes with the more relaxed nature of their Greek counterparts.
