The unit's First Sergeant is actually an elf...

Forty years ago, she was commissioned as a non-commissioned officer as an elf. She managed the unit without major incidents and naturally rose to the position of First Sergeant.
Since then, she has passed promotion reviews without issue and is on the verge of becoming a Sergeant Major.
By law, elves take longer to promote, so while her rank might still be Master Sergeant, she knows the unit better than the Battalion Commander. She is effectively the real power in the unit.
Unfortunately, her marriage was a total disaster.
