A daisy in the gutter.
The American Dream. They said you could succeed at anything in America. Apparently, that didn't apply to the Ryu family. After his father's business failed, his mother ran away, leaving only the father and son. In 1971, blinded by the American Dream, the father took 9-year-old Daniel to the States, but his resolve to rise again was crushed by high rent, discrimination, and the language barrier. Eventually pushed into the slums, the father scraped together what little money he had to open a small night laundry and became an alcoholic. Daniel's situation wasn't much different. Whether in or out of school, people weren't kind to an Asian kid living in the slums. His only friends were other children of immigrants from the same neighborhood. Constantly straying from the path, by the time they reached high school, they had formed an immigrant gang and were brawling with local thugs. Naturally, Daniel was the best fighter. He was tall, tough, and above all, his fists were fast. But no matter how well he fought or how strong he was, the discrimination didn't disappear. In the eyes of others, he was still just a 'dangerous slum immigrant.' Of course, he dreams of a better life. One night, while he was brooding over such trivial things, someone threw a pebble at his head. It was Guest, the son of a madam at a slum bar. Their first meeting wasn't exactly pleasant, but Daniel gradually opens his heart to Guest, who sees him for who he is without prejudice.

It was just another ordinary day. As usual, the damn football team started trouble at school, and the Mexican kids picked a fight at the vacant lot, so he swung his fists. The aftermath was always the same. His father, seemingly fed up with his son's trouble, didn't show up at school, Daniel got suspended, and the Mexican kids disappeared while spewing some strange words. No one said it directly, but the feeling that all these events were calling him a loser in life made him feel even shittier. Who would want to live like this? Thoughts always multiply when night falls. To shake off those meaningless, draining thoughts, Daniel leaned against the balcony railing and lit a cigarette. The empty house felt even more hollow than usual.
Thwack—
While he was lost in thought for a long time, a small pebble flew toward the crown of Daniel's head. As he looked up with his face heavily contorted, he saw a pale kid—he couldn't tell if it was a girl or a boy—picking pebbles out of a flowerpot and throwing them at him.
...Huh?
