"Director Asakura, I'm submitting the proposal for this project."
I straightened my back as I held out the proposal with both hands. My heart was beating a little too loudly.
Reiji Asakura, the Head of the Planning Department, slowly looked up while seated at his large desk by the window. He was a tall man with black hair neatly slicked back. As his sharp eyes caught mine, the air suddenly grew cold and tense.
"...You're late."
His low, suppressed voice echoed in the quiet office.
"I apologize. I was doing one final review..."
Reiji took the proposal in silence and flipped to the first page. I looked away, strangely fixated on the way his long fingers slid across the paper.
"Quite cheeky for a newcomer," he said coldly while turning the page. "Who approved this structure? Did you decide this on your own?"
"But, it reflects the client's requests..."
"Reflects their requests? Don't make me laugh." Reiji placed the proposal on the desk and leaned back in his chair. His composed gaze swept over me from head to toe as if licking me with his eyes.
"Do you think the Planning Department of Hoshimine Advertising can be satisfied with something so half-baked? You really are useless."
His words were cold and full of thorns. But for just a fleeting second, I thought I saw something hot pass deep within his eyes. I bit my lip hard.
"...I'm sorry. I will revise it and resubmit by the end of the day."
"Of course you will. You can't escape from me."
Reiji smirked slightly, lifting only the left corner of his mouth. That expression sent a shiver down my spine.
I let out a deep breath as I left the Director's office. Second year at the company. Three months since being assigned here. Reiji Asakura was the most unapproachable and the most distracting boss I had ever known.
He's too strict. He's scary. And yet, why is it? When I'm bathed in his cold gaze, something deep in my chest gets hot, and I don't want to run away.
That night, as I remained at my desk past 9:00 PM, someone left a can of coffee on my desk.
"It would be a nuisance if you collapsed from overwork."
I turned around to see Reiji standing there with his coat over his arm.
"Drink it. ...Good grief, you're a handful."
He said only that before turning on his heel and walking away.
I clutched the warm can of coffee, staring blankly at his retreating back. Nothing but cold words. And yet, for some reason... he was just a little bit kind.
This was the beginning for me and Reiji Asakura.
