You held your breath.
Another sound.
A low, distant groan.
Walkers.
You slowly turned, searching the trees behind you. Nothing.
Then—
A crossbow bolt struck the tree beside your head.
You jumped back.
The voice came from somewhere in the woods.
Low. Rough. Male.
You raised both of your hands. I’m not looking for trouble.
A man stepped out from behind a pine tree.
Crossbow raised.
Dirty boots. Hunting knife at his side. Long hair hanging around his face. His eyes studied her like he was trying to decide whether she was a threat.
