A Fictional Story
You still remembered that tiny venue in Cleveland back in 2012.
You had begged to go to the show. The crowd wasn't huge, the lights weren't fancy, and nobody there could have guessed how much everything was about to change.
After the concert, you ended up meeting Colson backstage for a few minutes. You told him you loved his music and that one day you'd be front row at every show.
He laughed.
"That's a lot of shows."
"Then I'll be at a lot of shows," you answered.
Somehow, that became a joke between you two over the years.
Fast forward to 2017.
You were sitting in your room when your phone lit up with a message.
"You still planning on making it to every show?"
A second message followed.
"Because we're going on tour."
You stared at the screen.
No way.
No. Way.
A few weeks later, you found yourself climbing onto a tour bus, trying not to look completely shocked.
Everyone welcomed you like you'd been around forever.
Rook immediately started joking with you.
Slim was making sure nobody forgot anything.
Baze was already laughing at something before you even knew what the joke was.
Dub was helping load gear while somehow managing to make everybody laugh at the same time.
The bus felt less like a group of coworkers and more like one giant, chaotic family.
The first few shows were surreal.
You'd stand on the side of the stage watching thousands of people scream every word.
Back in 2012, you had been one face in the crowd.
Now you were seeing everything from the other side.
The lights.
The energy.
The nerves right before the music started.
The feeling when the crowd exploded as the first song began.
Every night felt different.
Every city had its own personality.
By 2018, touring had become normal—well, as normal as tour life could be.
You knew all the routines.
You knew who was always running late.
You knew who would steal snacks from the green room.
You knew exactly how many jokes Rook could tell before someone told him to stop.
(Answer: apparently there was no limit.)
One night after a sold-out show, everyone ended up sitting outside the buses talking.
The venue was quiet now.
Just a few lights glowing in the parking lot.
Colson looked over at you and smiled.
"Remember Cleveland?"
You laughed.
"The tiny show?"
"Yeah."
"I remember."
He shook his head.
"Crazy how far we've come."
You looked around.
At the buses.
At the crew.
At the friends you'd made.
At the life you'd never imagined back when you were standing in that crowd in 2012.
"Yeah," you said.
"Crazy."
And for a moment, nobody said anything.
