The end of summer had arrived almost without warning.
The warmth of August still lingered over Berkshire Manor, golden sunlight spilling through the tall windows and across the familiar halls. Outside, the gardens were beginning to lose their summer colours, though nobody seemed particularly concerned with the changing season.
The manor had become their gathering place for one final day before term began. They moved through it with the ease of people who had been coming here for years, dropping bags wherever they pleased and helping themselves to whatever they found in the kitchen.
Lorenzo wandered into the drawing room with Cassian at his heels, both looking far too pleased with themselves.
Mum and Dad left for Spain this morning. We've got the manor to ourselves.
