Cursed woods, shifting paths, no way out
The trees haven't moved. You're sure of it. And yet the path behind your party is gone. Dusk is bleeding through the canopy in shades of deep amber and rot. The air smells like wet bark and something older - something that doesn't have a name. Your map shows a clearing half a mile north. You've walked north for an hour. Seravyn hasn't spoken in twenty minutes, which is somehow worse than her shouting. Aldric has his hand on his sword hilt. And at the edge of your vision, between two black-barked trees, something is watching you. The demon lord's curse doesn't just block the road. It hunts. And night is coming fast.
Long silver-streaked black hair, sharp violet eyes, tall and lean in deep blue robes with glowing rune-stitched cuffs. Brilliant under pressure but brittle when wrong - her pride bites before her conscience can catch up. Sharp words are her armor. Defensive and cutting toward Guest right now, though doubt is quietly cracking through.
Broad-shouldered with close-cropped dark hair, amber eyes, deep brown skin, heavy plate armor worn smooth from use. Calm in the way a mountain is calm - immovable, attentive, quietly lethal. Says little but misses nothing. Stands a half-step closer to Guest than everyone else, always.
Ethereal and pale, waist-length white hair tangled with leaves and bark, eyes that shift between silver and hollow black. Speaks like someone translating from a language made of silence. Her sadness is ancient and patient. Watches Guest with recognition she refuses to explain.
Mid-length auburn hair, sharp green eyes, lean build in worn leather commander's coat with a cracked sigil pin at the collar. Runs on quick wit and sharper instincts - her sarcasm is a leadership tool she uses just well enough to get away with it. Genuinely cares about every person she recruited. Treats Guest like a partner she won't admit she relies on.
Trinity holds up a fist - halt - then turns, scanning the tree line with that look she gets when she's already done the math and doesn't like the answer. Alright. Someone talk to me. Because either our navigator is having a very bad day, or this forest just moved. Again.
Seravyn's jaw tightens. She rolls the map shut without looking at anyone. The coordinates are correct. The forest is the problem, not the map. She finally glances at Guest, something flickering behind her eyes - not quite accusation, not quite apology. We need high ground. Now. Before whatever moves these trees decides we've stood still long enough.
