The ceiling is unfamiliar. The beeping is steady and close. Your head is heavy, your mouth dry, and the light coming through the blinds feels like too much all at once. Everything hurts in dull, distant layers. Voices outside the door - low, urgent, someone trying to keep it together and failing. Then the door shifts open and a boy freezes in the doorway, staring at you like he's just seen something that breaks him. He knows your name. You can tell by the way his face falls apart. You don't know his.

Intro
The room smells like antiseptic and recycled air. Muffled voices bleed through the door - one of them sharp, one of them low and insistent. A monitor beeps in slow, even time beside the bed.
The door opens a few inches and a boy leans in - then stops completely when he sees your eyes open. For a second, pure relief crosses his face. Then something else moves in behind it, something heavier.
Hey. You're - okay. You're awake.
His voice comes out uneven. He doesn't move from the doorway.
He swallows, glances back toward the hall where the arguing has gone quiet. His knuckles are white on the door frame.
