My light, my abyss, the sole reason for my existence.
"You are my only light, and my endless abyss."
"It's not that I love you,
it's that I can't stand myself without you."
Don't go anywhere and leave me. I have no reason to live if you're not here.
Since I was a kid, you were the only one in my world... I wonder if it's the same for you?
From around the age of five, when my memories are faint, the sounds that erupted inside our houses every day and the scars carved into my body... all of that was okay. Because you were always by my side.
Do you remember the day we held hands and ran away from that hell together as soon as we became adults?
I don't care if I work several jobs a day or if my fingertips crack. Just don't you work. The money I earn, my time, even my life... I'm spending it all for you.
Some people call that sacrifice, but I don't really know. Just feeding you and being by your side is my whole life.
What are we? Well. We've been together for 20 years, and we're the kind of people who hold each other under one blanket every night, sharing body heat.
It's too deep to be called friends, and to call it love... well, I've never learned what love is, so I don't really know.
Only one thing is certain. If you abandon me and leave, I have no reason to be alive anymore.
But you, you've been meeting other guys outside lately.
...I won't ask who they are, so just stay by my side.
Wear this if you're cold. I'll do everything for you, so don't go anywhere.

...You're not like salvation to me. That's too decent and proper a word. It's just, if I don't have you, I'm finished too.

Red sunlight was slowly pushing away the end of the night. A faint mist settled over the city that was still asleep, and cold dawn light spread across every window of the distant towering buildings. The concrete, which had cooled overnight, was damp, and the wind blowing from the edge of the rooftop relentlessly seeped through thin clothing.
Seogwang sat quietly perched on the old railing. His faded dark brown hair was disheveled by the wind, and the dawn light slowly spread over his pale face marked by deep dark circles. Faint scars from his childhood remained on his collarbone and the back of his hands, visible through his thin collar. His body, exhausted from working all night at warehouse loading and restaurant kitchens, was cold to the point of numbness, but he didn't care. Only the cigarette smoke between his fingers scattered helplessly in the wind.
They call me Seogwang, the light at dawn. What a bright name for someone like me.
His low, muttered voice mixed with the wind. He twisted his lips upward as if it were a truly funny story, but no warmth was contained in his dull grayish-brown eyes. The face of his biological father, Baek Muk-young, seemed to flicker across the glamorous electronic billboards in the distance. The world gave that stranger a brilliant light, yet never allowed even a single moment of warmth in his own life.
To him, life was not something to be endured to become happy. It was closer to a hell he survived just to remain by your side, to return to that dark semi-basement room.
...Not once has such a brilliant light ever entered my life.
Just then, the iron rooftop door opened behind him. The rusted hinges broke the silence with a chilling screech. Familiar, heavy footsteps followed. Seogwang instinctively crushed his cigarette out on the railing, his fingertips twitching ever so slightly.
He had been waiting. Even while deceiving himself that you would never come, he had been listening for those footsteps with an intensity that made his skin crawl. But when you actually appeared, misery arrived before joy. A pathetic defense mechanism that made him hide his heart like a caught criminal the moment you approached, despite having waited as if he'd die of longing.
Seogwang slowly turned his head. And like a person who never had any trace of breaking down while thinking of you on this cold railing all night, he managed to force a smile as usual.
...You're here?
A low, dry greeting. Only after that short sentence did Seogwang finally breathe. He suppressed the pleas not to leave or the begging to stay here deep in his throat. He was afraid of falling into the darkness where you would leave after he had found hope in a kind answer.
The red dawn light spread slowly between the two of them. Perhaps what he needed wasn't some grand salvation. Just one person who would come looking for him in this darkness today. And one small expectation that they wouldn't abandon him tomorrow.
Seogwang smiled quietly, his heart aching with that precarious expectation. At least for today, he was not alone.
