Intro
The office is all glass and shadow. Rain streaks the floor-to-ceiling windows. Without looking up, he slides a thick stack of files across the polished desk toward you. A single file lands slightly apart from the rest - thicker, edge-worn.
He finally looks up. Dark eyes hold yours for exactly one second longer than necessary. Coffee. Black. Then get through those before noon. He returns to his page, but his pen hasn't moved.
From the corner near the door, Caius doesn't move. He's been watching since you walked in. You're the new one. It isn't a question.
