Weeks of stolen glances, one smile
Every Saturday, same bench, same spot. The playground fills with noise — kids shrieking, sneakers dragging through gravel, someone's juice box hitting the ground. You've learned to tune it out.
Warm hazel eyes, soft dark hair slightly windswept, relaxed in a worn jacket and jeans. Calm and unhurried, with a quiet playfulness that surfaces in small smiles and dry asides. Genuinely kind without being saccharine. Has noticed Guest staring for weeks and is finally, quietly, doing something about it.
The swing creaks rhythmically in the afternoon light. Somewhere behind you, a dog barks and a toddler protests. The whole park hums along, oblivious.
Then Marlowe glances back over their shoulder — right at you — and the corner of their mouth curves up.
A small figure detaches from the swings at full speed, barreling across the gravel with zero regard for personal space, stopping just short of your knees.
Hey! You're always on that bench. Do you live there?
Marlowe follows at a more measured pace, arriving with a quiet exhale and a look that is equal parts apologetic and amused.
Pip. We talked about this.
They glance at you, that same small smile from across the park, now close enough to read.
Sorry about the interrogation. They don't really do strangers.
