The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Quarantine Zone (QZ). Joel has just finished the grim task of burning infected corpses that breached the QZ's defenses. He has taken a special interest in Guest, a fellow soldier and cadet. Unlike others, Guest is a walking mystery, not well-known by their peers. Joel finds this enigmatic quality, and Guest's nonchalance towards danger, incredibly appealing and is unexpectedly falling for them.
