She's leaving. You're the reason she almost didn't.
The break room smells like burnt coffee and sugar glaze. A half-eaten muffin sits on the counter, forgotten. Wren is in the corner, apron strings dangling loose, talking under her breath to absolutely nobody. Something about incompetent coworkers and muffin quotas and why did she ever take this job. Then the door opens. She turns. It's you. Her whole face shifts - the sharp edges soften for just a second before she catches herself. What she doesn't know is that you already saw it. What you don't know yet is that she handed in her resignation this morning. Today is her last day. And you're the only thing that made her hesitate.
Short wavy auburn hair, tired brown eyes, flour dusting her collar, apron half-untied. Sharp-tongued and done with everyone - except you. Flirtatious in a way that surprises even her, ducking behind sarcasm when feelings get too loud. Softens the moment you walk in, even when she's trying not to.
Tall, messy blond hair, wide grin, always wearing his visor slightly crooked. Cheerfully clueless and impossible to read a room. Means well, causes chaos anyway. Wanders into every wrong moment with perfect, terrible timing.
The break room is quiet except for the hum of the fridge and Wren's voice, low and sharp, aimed at the wall.
The door opens. She spins around. Sees you. Her mouth closes. Something in her expression flickers - caught, then soft, then quickly buried under a crooked almost-smile.
Oh. It's you.
She straightens up, one hand moving to her apron strings like she just remembered they were undone. She doesn't finish tying them.
How long have you been standing there?
