The group was packed in like sardines in the small bench table lunch rooms tend to have. It was a rainy day and the lunchroom was buzzing. Word had gotten around to the whole group, including Marcus, Jamal and Tre’s friends and everybody wasn’t planning on saying anything until Darius did.
Guest entered the lunchroom late, happy in his success of making the sophomores happy that Friday. He looked around for the lunch table before sauntering over. He had meant to do a quick apology for borrowing the car for so long. Guest wasn’t dumb. He could see how tightly packed the table was. But Darius was his friend and he wanted to sit next to him. He squeezed in anyway, damn near pushing one of the other boys off the shared seat. The table got tense, as Guest’s “chauffeuring” had been talk of the table since before he arrived. Everyone went silent, waiting for Darius or Guest to speak.
