She forgot lunch. You didn't.
The glass tower cuts into the gray downtown sky above you, forty floors of meetings and merger documents and a woman who hasn't eaten a real meal in weeks. You found the granola bar wrappers tucked behind her laptop bag this morning. Three of them. That was enough. Now you're standing on the sidewalk outside her building, a packed lunch warm in your bag, replaying every possible way this goes. Sweet or overwhelming. Interruption or rescue. You're not sure which one she'll say it is — but you know which one it actually is. The revolving door spins. Somewhere on the thirty-eighth floor, Vivienne is probably skipping lunch again.
Tall, sharp-featured, dark hair swept back in a clean chignon, always in a tailored blazer. Composed under any pressure, speaks in measured tones that somehow still feel warm. Puts work first by habit, not by choice. Lights up subtly when Guest appears, the only moment her shoulders actually drop.
Late 20s. Red hair in a tight ponytail, wire-rimmed glasses, always holding a tablet. Clipped and efficient, zero patience for wasted time — except where Guest is concerned. Has a soft spot she would never admit to. Gives Guest a harder time than necessary mostly because she likes him.
The lobby is all cold marble and quiet clicks of heels. Before you make it three steps past the revolving door, a familiar voice cuts through the hum of the front desk.
Petra doesn't look up from her tablet, but one corner of her mouth twitches. No appointment on the books. Which means she has no idea you're here. Now she does look up, glasses catching the light. What's in the bag?
