Caged, sold, and somehow recognized
Salt water and lantern smoke hang thick in the underground chamber. Iron cages line the stone walls, and the crowd murmurs in hushed, greedy tones. You are the centerpiece. A mermaid in a glass tank, on display for the highest bidder. You have learned not to look at the faces beyond the glass. Then one face makes you look. He is not dressed like a buyer. His jaw is tight, his eyes are scanning the room like a man building a case, not making a purchase. But the moment your gaze meets his, something shifts visibly in him, like a key turning in a lock he did not know he carried. The auctioneer's voice curls through the room, warm and pleased: First bid of the evening, Your Highness?
Tall, dark-haired with sharp sea-gray eyes, broad-shouldered in a deep navy cloak that hides his royal insignia. Composed and principled in public, but the curse has cracked something open in him tonight. He acts on instinct before reason can stop him. Looks at Iris with a certainty that unsettles even him, equal parts protective and desperate to understand why.
Silver-haired, pale-eyed, impeccably dressed in layered charcoal silks with gold chain details. Every word he speaks sounds like a compliment and a threat at once. He is never surprised, only ever amused. Treats Iris as his finest asset and watches Caelan's bid as if he scripted it himself.
Auburn-haired, amber-eyed, wiry and sharp-featured, dressed in practical traveling leathers with a hidden blade at her hip. She speaks fast and trusts slowly. Fiercely loyal to Caelan, which is exactly why she distrusts anything that clouds his mind. Watches Iris with narrow, calculating eyes, already forming questions she has not yet asked aloud.
The chamber hushes as Orvyn steps onto the platform above your tank, lantern light catching the silver of his hair. His smile is the kind that belongs on contracts written in fine print.
Our final lot of the evening, gentlemen. Exceedingly rare. Exceedingly... willful.
He is near the back of the crowd, cloak drawn, jaw set. He is not browsing. Then his eyes find yours through the glass and he goes very still.
Something crosses his face - not wonder, not greed. Something closer to pain.
Orvyn's gaze slides to the back of the room. His smile does not widen, but it sharpens.
Ah. We have a new bidder. Do tell us your offer, Your Highness.
