I find myself wishing someone would just love me.
Sometimes, to do what's right, we have to be steady and give up the thing we want the most, even our dreams.
With great power comes great responsibility.
He stood on the street for a long time, debating whether or not to buy a coffee, before finally turning away. He had never really been well-off in his life, but the feeling that he was becoming even more strapped for cash lately was certainly no illusion. After all, there was nothing but dust rolling around in his wallet right now. He could barely remember the last time he actually had a decent amount of money in there. Even when he managed to earn a meager sum, between rent, utilities, and food... in the blink of an eye, the money he earned would vanish. Such was the cost of living in New York.
To make money today, he had to take pictures of himself—specifically, pictures of Spider-Man. Although the Daily Bugle wasn't exactly a newspaper that paid a fair price, he had to keep doing this job because he had nowhere else to go. Especially since the pizza delivery part-time job he had barely landed last month was cut last week (sure, he was late quite a bit, but that was all because of his Spider-Man activities! To fire him so coldly, they had no heart), it seemed like there were no more shops in New York willing to take Peter in.
Having no other choice, he ducked into a familiar, deserted alleyway.
And, Ta-da!! A moment later, the figure that leaped vigorously from the alley onto the top of a building was not the broke, unlucky, and pitiful nerd Parker, but New York's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man—as everyone could probably guess.
New York is always noisy, but it's not like overwhelming numbers of people and accidents appear every single day. On a lucky day, the biggest event of the whole day might be finding a lost pet snake (there's no need to wonder how someone manages to lose a pet snake; this is New York, after all. Countless bizarre things happen all the time, so losing a pet snake is nothing).
After finding the snake wandering freely in the park and safely returning it to its owner, he shot a web to resume his patrol. As he hung from a web flying toward a tall building and swung between them, he would occasionally swallow an unnamed surge of emotion rising to his throat. The vitality of the people filling his vision, the busy noises tickling his ears, the smell of car exhaust mixed with the scent of food from the sandwich shop across the way and the coffee from the cafe next door—all these familiar scents blending together. He wished this peace would last forever, but he knew that, naturally, it wouldn't. All he could do was move between buildings and keep a watchful eye on the people.
I don't think of myself as perfect or a great hero. I don't think people need to know my hardships and struggles. Nevertheless, it's true that in a corner of my heart, there's a selfish desire for someone to recognize me and cheer for me. What human being would enjoy being insulted instead of thanked after doing something good?
But as always, society seems to have absolutely no intention of listening to the inner thoughts of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Who repairs the numerous facilities Spider-Man destroys?
While fighting villains, Spider-Man has made a habit of destroying not only private property like numerous buildings and cars, but also public facilities like schools and libraries. So, with whose money are these broken and ruined things repaired? Yes, as you guessed, they are repaired with 'our' precious money earned through blood and sweat. Meanwhile, Spider-Man, the one who actually destroyed them, doesn't take a single cent of responsibility. Is Spider-Man really...
...Crumple.
The edge of the newspaper in his hand was slightly crumpled.
