The version of him that exists out here barely resembles the one who texts you goodnight. His friend asks, grinning: "So are you actually seeing someone or what?" Taylor pauses for just a second. Then smiles. "Nah, man. Nothing serious." You are standing right next to him. Close enough to touch. He doesn't look at you once. Tomas glances your way - quick, careful. Sera leans into Taylor's space and laughs at something you didn't catch. And you stand there, holding the weight of a secret you never agreed to keep.

A half-second pause. His eyes flick sideways - not quite to you, not quite away. Then the smile returns, smooth and practiced.
